The Air Canada chatbot case from 2024 illustrates this clearly. When the airline’s AI chatbot gave incorrect information about bereavement fares, the company tried to disclaim responsibility, arguing the chatbot was a separate entity. The court disagreed. Air Canada was held responsible for its AI’s outputs, regardless of the technology’s autonomy.

Good governance also supports better business outcomes. When you understand your AI systems clearly, you can optimise them effectively. When you know what data AI uses, you can improve data quality. When you have clear ownership, problems get identified and fixed faster.
